The Chidamoyo Trust is a registered UK charity. It aims to help poor people in north-west Zimbabwe. The lives of these unsophisticated people have been devastated by the global HIV epidemic. Zimbabwe has a population of 12 million with up to 50% all adults infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. Over 3000 people a week die from AIDS and there are 1.5 million AIDS orphans to care for. Political instability means shortages of the basic necessities of life. The Trust supports the work of The Chidamoyo and Makonde Christian Hospitals.
Money is used for:
• Orphan Support. For £10 a month, milk can be supplied for a baby orphaned by AIDS.
• School Scholarships. A pupil can be sponsored through high school for £10 a month. Many children are not sent to school because of lack of money and boys are sent before girls. Education can prevent early marriages and sexual abuse and pupils are taught to make good sexual choices to prevent AIDS.
• AIDS Home Care. For £7 a month, protein food to supplement the diet of home care patients can be provided. Beans, fish and milk are provided to help patients live longer.
• Support of Hospital Services. Each month, £3,500 is needed to supplement the money received from the Zimbabwean government to keep the hospitals providing full services.
