During his visit to the UK Mr Mereki expressed his wish that the stone sinks at Chidamoyo be replaced by an efficient, more hygienic and cheaper to run industrial washing machine. His vision is being realised. The machine has arrived and this week the electrician and plumber will install it.
Money for the washing machine was raised mainly locally in Crowthorne, although there was a substantial contribution from Rotary Australia.
Delivery was not without incident. The machine was bought in Johannesburg and delivered to Harare. After it cleared customs etc, the hospital sent it's biggest truck from Chidamoyo to collect it, but it didn't fit. A bigger truck was hired. When it finally arrived everyone was so excited--even the doctor (in green scrubs) went to help unload! The picture shows Chidamoyo's human forklift - 10 men, carrying the machine into the laundry after a wall had been knocked out to accommodate it.
