Well the plan is for me to leave for Chidamoyo in the morning. Everything has been quiet there since elections and so Major and Dr. Mash want me back to work! I have kept busy in Harare running around and getting things for the hospital and fixing up my flat here in town. We have had some rains here and at Chidamoyo. While it is too late to help with the crops, it is good for the water table level and keeps things green!
Many people have written to ask how they can help with the drought and hunger now going on in Zimbabwe. In our area we are doing well and most people have crops and will be able to feed themselves. We were able to buy up ahead and have enough for several months for feeding our patients. Unfortunately, this has become a political problem and groups that have been distributing food have been arrested and their food confiscated. We are leaving it to big organizations like the UN Food program and World Vision to fight it out with the government and get the food into the people. Any Zimbabwean caught giving out food is put in danger of being arrested or even killed for the food they have. Prayer is the best help you can give us right now.
Tonight is our Bible College graduation and we have 2 students graduating. One is from an area very far away from Chidamoyo, near Binga, and one from Mudzimu (12 miles away). the one from Mudzimu is the son of a special patient who in 1982 had twin girls that were premies and kept in the hospital for 2 months to grow. She became a Christian during that time and has been a wonderful woman leader at the church at Mudzimu. Now her son will be a minister there!
I am sure there is plenty of work awaiting me at the hospital and look forward to getting back to work. This is the longest period of time that I have been in Harare since I came here in 1981. I must say I enjoy the bush and the quiet much more than town life! People here have been very depressed due to the election results and there is the expectation in the air of what will happen next. In the bush people have gotten back to life as it was before election, but still with some hesitation as to what the future hold! We are glad to know who holds the future and that He is the one who knows what will happen next!
Thanks for all your prayers and thoughts--we have felt them and we know that is the only reason the country has not been blown apart by violence. It has been great having E-mail contact everyday and a phone at my fingertips! Also electricity 24 hours a day has been great--but I still get tired by 9 p.m. and end up going to bed by 10 p.m. and up at the usual 5 or 6 a.m.! I will try and keep in touch as my computer can get to town to send E-mails, but don't worry if you don't hear from me for awhile--with no phone it is hard to communicate quickly.
Love, Kathy
